윌리엄 버드의 수제자 쯤 되는 이로, 올란도 기본즈와 함께 르네상스와 바로크를 이어주는 시대적 소명을 수행한 작곡가로 통하는 토마스 톰킨스 Thomas Tomkins가 오늘의 주인공입니다.
헨리 8세 때 해치워버린 영국 국교회로의 종교개혁이 정착된 이후 시기에 활동했기 때문에 그의 종교음악은 100% 가까이 영어만을 이용한 작품이며, 몬테베르디와 동시대를 산 이답게, 마드리갈 같은 세속 가요에 건반악기 독주곡까지, 대단한 활동범위를 자랑한 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
톰킨스가 활동하던 시절, 스튜어트 왕가가 막장짓을 하던 때라서인가, 반 다이크가 그린 찰스 1세 초상을 표지로 사용했습니다.
