Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Royals have signed Rick
Ankiel to a one-year, $3.25 million contract with a $6 million mutual
option for 2011. It's pretty
impressive that agent Scott Boras was able to convince the Royals to
add such a high-salary second-year mutual option, whether it's ever
exercised or not. Ankiel has provided baseball with a few major
storylines over the years, both positive and negative, but he hit just
.231 with a .285 on-base percentage last season and has quite a few
holes in his swing.

Miguel Cabrera revealed on Thursday that he has spent three months undergoing alcohol abuse treatment with a doctor in Miami.
"When you've got problems," said Cabrera, "you can't hide." Cabrera,
who turns 27 in April, hasn't had a drink since counseling began last
fall. Everything went completely off course during the season's final
weekend, as he was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife
following an alcohol-fueled night in Chicago. He batted 324/.396/.547
with 34 homers and 103 RBI last season, even garnering a first-place
MVP vote. It obviously wasn't warranted, but he remains one of the most
talented hitters in the sport if he can keep his head on straight.
