PHILADELPHIA — Darnell McDonald is 5 for 46 (.109) with one extra-base hit and three RBIs this season. Given how long the Red Sox have been playing, it's quite possible they've fielded a lineup with a weaker No. 5 hitter. But maybe not.

Naturally, Terry Francona was asked about his lineup.

"Who would you have hit?" he said. "I thought about it a lot. But I didn't think there was a better lineup."

Lefties are hitting .204/.219/.311 against Cliff Lee this season. In 106 plate appearances, they have 25 strikeouts and one walk. So that ruled out J.D. Drew and Josh Reddick.

Francona is showing faith in McDonald based on prior performance and the hope that more at-bats will get him going.

"He's had a few line-outs," Francona said. "If he works himself into a count where he can get a pitch he can handle, he can really do some damage. He's gone through a little bit of a period now where he's swung at some breaking balls, some changeups and got himself either in the hole or made some easier outs. I do think he's getting closer. I know his batting average is what it is.

"But I think against a lefty, I know he's dangerous. When he gets it going, he saw him get real hot last year and do some damage. That's kind of what the hope is. But I can understand the question. Having David [Ortiz] not there makes it hard."
